Prevalence and severity of periodontal disease in mandibular molar teeth of adult smokers

Background: Smoking has been associated with periodontal disease severity and is considered a risk factor for its development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and severity of periodontal destruction in mandibular molar teeth of adult smokers and non-smokers. Materials and Methods: The study group consisted of 100 subjects (50 smokers & 50 non-smokers) age range (30-60) years of both sexes. Plaque index (PLI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), calculus index (CLI), gingival recession (GR), tooth mobility (MO), furcation involvement (FI), probing pocket depth (PPD) and teeth loss were assessed at mandibular molar teeth excluding the third molar.
